SmartLipo is the brand name of a type of laser liposuction device. The SmartLipo laser was the first laser liposuction device available and has been a pioneer in the field of laser liposuction.
The technique of laser liposuction utilizes a laser to both melt fat and heat the surrounding and overlying collagen. This laser is introduced into the fat through a small steel tube through small incisions in the skin. Usually, fat is suctioned before and/or after the laser is used.
The benefits of SmartLipo, and laser liposuction, may be decreased bruising and tightening of the overlying skin. The theory behind decreased bruising is that the laser may seal small blood vessels in addition to its other effects. To date, there are no good studies that support the benefit of improved skin tightening that laser liposuction proposes to offer. However, patient satisfaction from laser liposuction is generally high.
The difference between SmartLipo and other types of laser liposuction is primarily the type of laser used. Lasers generate light of a specific wavelength, and the differences in one wavelength versus another may translate into a different effect.
