Liposuction of the Tummy

The tummy (stomach) is one of the most common areas to be sculpted by liposuction, and liposuction can produce excellent results using local anesthesia only. Local anesthesia liposuction is the safest, least painful, and most effective method for achieving a smooth, natural appearance.

How Liposuction of the Tummy Works

First, the fat of the tummy is numbed gently using a dilute solution of local anesthesia. Then, the fat is extracted using very small surgical instruments called microcannulas. Since, microcannulas remove a controlled amount of fat with each pass through the area being sculpted, they produce a smoother result than traditional liposuction using larger instruments.

Liposuction of the Tummy Is Quick!

Liposuction, or liposculpture, of the stomach can easily be accomplished in one to two hours and can often be combined with other areas if the stomach is not too large. In women, the thighs, hips, arms, or neck are frequently combined areas. In men, the love handles, chest, and neck are often combined.

Recovery Is Fast

Recovery after liposuction of the tummy is similar to recovery of other areas using the minimally invasive technique. Most patients have mild soreness for a few days and describe the feeling as similar to soreness they would have if they had done a thousand sit-ups the night before. Patients can often return to exercise within the first week. The new, thinner shape is usually visible by 3 - 4 weeks but may take 12 - 20 weeks to fully appear.

Are You A Good Candidate for Liposuction of the Tummy?

Good candidates for liposuction of the tummy are patients who have extra fat in this area who are in relatively good physical condition. The fat must be overlying the stomach muscles. Tummy fat overlies the stomach muscles in most women. Many men, however, have stomach fat underlying the abdominal muscles. This is the typical "beer belly" stomach. If the stomach fat is overlying your stomach muscles, you should be able to grab it with one hand and move it around. Fat overlying the tummy muscles can be removed by liposuction.

Do You Need Liposuction or a Tummy Tuck?

Many people wonder if they need a tummy tuck instead of liposuction of the tummy. Most patients do not need a tummy tuck. Unless you have a large amount of VERY loose skin, your skin will retract nicely after liposuction making a tummy tuck unnecessary. A tummy tuck is an invasive procedure and carries a much higher risk than minimally invasive liposuction. The risk of death from a tummy tuck procedure is real; whereas, there have been no deaths and very few complications reported in liposuction using local anesthesia only.
